Just finished Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day by Winifred Watson. Here.
I bought the book after seeing a quick commercial for the upcoming movie staring Frances McDormand. I don't plan on seeing the movie, but something about the story intrigued me.
I highly recommend the book. The story takes place in a single day in London just before WWII . Unloved and unlovable Miss Pettigrew is on her last legs, not having eaten in days. She is a poor governess looking for work. After answering the wrong ad, she stumbles into the enchanted world of nightclub singer Delysia LaFosse and her many lovers.
Miss Pettigrew finds she has unimagined skill as a fixer of Miss LaFosse and her wild friends' man problems.
The cover of the reissue doesn't do the story any justice, but the original line drawings inside are great.
